How to get a California driver's license
First license as an adult? Apply online, book an office visit, bring your documents, pay $46, pass the vision and written tests, practice with your permit, then pass the drive test. You walk out with a paper license; the plastic card arrives in about 3–4 weeks. The DMV website has all of this, but spread across dozens of pages. Here it is in order, with the exact link for each step.
Checked against dmv.ca.gov on October 9, 2026. Rules and fees change, and the official DMV page always wins.
First decision: REAL ID or a standard license?
You choose this on the application, so decide before you start. Both let you drive. The difference is what else the card works for.
| Standard license | REAL ID license | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive in California | Yes | Yes |
| Board a U.S. domestic flight (since May 7, 2025) | No, you'd need a passport or other accepted ID | Yes |
| Enter secure federal buildings and military bases | No | Yes |
| Proof of California residency | 1 document | 2 different documents |
| Identity document | 1 original or certified copy | 1 original or certified copy, showing your full legal name and date of birth |
| What the card looks like | Marked "Federal Limits Apply" | Gold bear with a star in the top right corner |
| Extra fee | None | None listed on DMV's fee page; it's the same application |
| Who can get it | Everyone who qualifies, including AB 60 applicants | Not available with an AB 60 license |
Our take: if you'll ever fly within the U.S. and don't want to carry your passport, choose REAL ID now. It's one extra piece of mail as proof of address, and it saves a second trip to the DMV later.

Official DMV links, in one place
The DMV site also handles car registration, boats, disabled placards and much more, so the page you need is often buried. These go straight to it.
How to book: what to click on the DMV site
This is where most people get lost. The appointments page has no direct links for each service, so you have to click through it. Here is the exact path.
Office visit (first license or permit, written test)
- Open the Appointments page.
- On the left, under "Make an appointment", click "First-time DL Application" (or "First-time REAL ID Application" if you chose REAL ID).
- Under "Option 3: I need an appointment in the future", click "Get an Appointment".
- Pick the service, then choose an office, date and time. Write down the confirmation.
- Can't find a slot? Check other offices nearby, or try again early in the morning.
Behind-the-wheel drive test
- Open the same Appointments page.
- On the right, under "Choose a vehicle", click "Select" next to "Automobile".
- Click "Make an Appointment", then choose an office, date and time.
- Drive tests are by appointment only. You can also book by phone: 1-800-777-0133.
Going today without an appointment? Use "Get in Line Now" to join the office queue remotely. It doesn't replace a drive test appointment.

Step by step
- 1
Apply online
Fill in the online application (eDL 44). You'll need a MyDMV account (an email address plus a phone for the verification code), your Social Security number, legal name, home address and date of birth. This is also where you choose REAL ID or standard. When you submit, DMV emails you a confirmation number.
Tips- The form logs you out after 15 minutes of inactivity, but you can sign back in and pick up where you left off.
- Your application stays saved for up to a year. Nothing is processed until you show up at an office.
- The form is available in 10 languages, including Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese and Hindi.
- 2
Gather your documents
Identity: one original or certified copy, no photocopies. A U.S. passport or birth certificate works; for non-citizens, a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and approved I-94. Social Security number: you enter it on the application. Proof of California residency: one document for a standard license, two different ones for REAL ID, with your name and the same California address as your application.
Tips- Common residency proofs are a utility bill, lease, bank statement or insurance document. Photocopies are fine for these.
- If your current name is different from your identity document (marriage, for example), bring the name-change paperwork.
- Unsure? Run the REAL ID checklist; it builds the list for you.

Book an office appointment
Adults visit an office by appointment to get the permit. Follow the click path in "How to book" above, or join the walk-in line remotely on the day.
Tips- Offices don't start written tests after 4:30 p.m., so don't book a late slot if you plan to test the same day.

At the office: fee, thumbprint, vision test, photo
You pay a nonrefundable $46. That keeps your application open for 12 months and includes up to 3 drive test attempts. Staff scan your thumbprint and take your photo. The vision standard is 20/40 with both eyes together, or 20/40 in one eye and at least 20/70 in the other, with or without glasses.
Tips- Bring the confirmation number from your online application.
- If you test with glasses or contacts, your license will require you to drive with them.
- If you don't pass the eye test, DMV refers you to an eye doctor who fills in form DL 62.
- 5
Pass the written (knowledge) test
Multiple choice. Every question comes from the California Driver's Handbook, and you need 80% to pass. You get 3 tries; fail the same test 3 times and you start the application over. No handbook, no phone. The test is offered in many languages, and the handbook is published in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Armenian, Hindi, Punjabi and Russian.
Tips- Missed a question? Staff can tell you which page of the handbook covers it.
- Road sign questions ask what you should do, not just what the sign is called.
- Online testing is currently for renewals only, so first-time applicants test at the office.

Get your instruction permit and practice
With the permit you may drive only with a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 (25 if you're under 18), sitting close enough to take control. DMV pages are not consistent about a minimum holding period for adults, so confirm with DMV before booking your drive test.
Tips- Practice the things the examiner scores: full stops at the limit line, checking over your shoulder before lane changes, signaling, keeping a safe gap, and backing in a straight line.
- Read the DL 32 score sheet once. It's exactly what the examiner marks.

Pass the behind-the-wheel drive test
Bring your permit, a licensed driver to come with you, and a car with valid proof of insurance and registration. The test starts with a pre-drive check, then the drive itself with only the examiner in the car. Driver-assist features such as self-parking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control must be off. You have 3 attempts per application, and each retest costs $9.
Tips- See the drive test day checklist below. A broken brake light or a missing mirror ends the test before you start.
- A rental car is fine only if your name is on the contract and it doesn't exclude drive tests.
- Backup cameras are allowed, but you still have to turn your head and look.
- 8
Paper license now, card by mail
Pass, and you get a temporary paper license that is valid for 60 days. You can drive on your own right away. The plastic card is mailed to the address on your application, usually within 3–4 weeks.
Tips- No card after 60 days? Call DMV at 1-800-777-0133.
- Moved recently? Make sure DMV has your current mailing address.
Drive test day checklist
- Your instruction permit, and a licensed driver to bring you and the car
- Proof of insurance and current registration for the car
- Driver's window rolls down; windshield clear enough to see through
- At least two mirrors, one on the left outside
- Brake lights, turn signals and horn all work
- Tires have tread (no donut spare) and the parking brake holds
- Seat belts work for you and the examiner
- Self-parking, lane-keeping and adaptive cruise switched off; nobody else in the car, no recording
Your situation
Under 18
- Permit at 15½ or older: driver education certificate, application, and a parent or guardian signature (both parents if custody is shared). The parent comes to the appointment and needs their own MyDMV account to approve the application.
- The permit only becomes valid once professional behind-the-wheel training starts.
- Before the drive test: hold the permit at least 6 months, finish 6 hours of professional training, and log 50 hours of supervised practice (10 at night) with a licensed driver aged 25 or older.
- For the first 12 months of the license: no driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and no passengers under 20 unless a licensed driver aged 25 or older is with you.
- Failed a test? Wait 7 days for the written test and 14 days for the drive test, not counting the day you failed.
Moving here with a license from another U.S. state
- California residents need a California license to drive. DMV's Fast Facts sheet (2020 edition) says to get one within 10 days of becoming a resident; the current web pages just say to apply, so don't wait.
- Same office steps: application, identity, Social Security number, residency, fee, thumbprint, vision test, photo and the written test.
- DMV's page doesn't list a drive test for holders of a valid out-of-state license.
- Brought a car? Register it in California within 20 days.
License from another country (immigrants, international students)
- Follow the same steps, and you also take the drive test, which needs an appointment and proof of insurance.
- Bring a licensed driver with you to and from the drive test.
- With a student or work visa you can get a standard license or REAL ID. It expires when your U.S. legal-presence document does. A foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and approved I-94 counts as identity.
No proof of legal presence (AB 60)
- You can get an AB 60 license if you can prove your identity and California residency.
- Use DMV's AB 60 checklist for the accepted documents. Without them, you'll need a secondary review interview before the drive test.
- The written test is available in more than 40 languages.
- An AB 60 license can't be a REAL ID, so it doesn't work for domestic flights.

FAQ
Can I take the written test online?
As of October 2026, DMV's online testing page says online testing is only for eligible Class C renewals. First-time applicants take the written test at a DMV office.
Should I get a REAL ID?
If you'll fly within the U.S. without a passport, yes. Since May 7, 2025, a standard license doesn't work at airport security. REAL ID needs one more proof of address and is chosen on the same application.
How much does a California driver's license cost?
The Class C original application is $46. It covers the written test and up to 3 drive test attempts within 12 months; after that, each drive test retest is $9.
Does DMV have practice tests in my language?
Yes for Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Armenian, Punjabi, Russian, Farsi and Tagalog (4 tests each), plus English. There's no official Hindi sample test, although the handbook is available in Hindi.
Why can't I find the booking page for my service?
The DMV appointments page doesn't have a separate link for each service. Open the Appointments page and click through: left side for office visits (First-time DL Application, then Get an Appointment), right side for drive tests (Automobile, then Make an Appointment).
I just moved to California. How soon do I need a California license?
DMV's Fast Facts sheet (2020) says within 10 days of becoming a resident. The current website doesn't give a number of days, so apply as soon as you can. Cars must be registered within 20 days.
