What documents do I need for a California REAL ID?
Bring one identity document (an original or certified copy, no photocopies), your Social Security number, and two different printed documents proving California residency with your name and the same address as your application. If your name has changed, bring the name-change papers too.
1. One identity document
It must show your full legal name and date of birth, and it must be an original or certified copy. A U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate works. For non-citizens, a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an approved I-94 is accepted.
2. Your Social Security number
You enter it on the application. DMV says to include it if you are eligible for or have been issued one.
3. Two proofs of California residency
Two different documents, such as a utility bill, a lease or rental agreement, a bank statement or an insurance document. They must show your name and the California address on your application. Photocopies are acceptable for residency documents. A standard (non-REAL ID) license needs only one.
Name changed?
If your current name doesn't match your identity document, for example after marriage, bring the legal name-change documents that connect the two.
Do I even need a REAL ID?
Since May 7, 2025 you need a REAL ID, or another federally accepted ID such as a passport, to board U.S. domestic flights and enter secure federal facilities. REAL ID is optional; a standard license still lets you drive. It's chosen on the same application.
