Do I need proof of insurance for the California DMV drive test?
Yes. DMV's handbook lists valid proof of insurance and vehicle registration among the things you must bring to the drive test, along with your permit, a licensed driver to accompany you and a car that passes the safety check. Without them, expect the test to be rescheduled.
What DMV asks for
The handbook says to bring valid proof of insurance and registration for the vehicle you'll test in. It doesn't say the policy must be in your name, so a family member's or friend's insured car is the usual choice.
What counts as proof
An insurance ID card or other document from the insurance company for that car. DMV's insurance page lists other forms too, such as a DMV self-insurance certificate, but for a test car it's almost always the insurer's card.
California's minimum coverage
Every car driven on California roads needs liability insurance of at least $30,000 for injury or death of one person, $60,000 for more than one person and $15,000 for property damage. Comprehensive or collision coverage alone doesn't count.
Rental and borrowed cars
For a rental, your name must be on the rental contract, and the contract must not exclude drive tests. For a borrowed car, confirm with the owner that their policy covers you as a permit holder; DMV's pages don't spell this out.

FAQ
Is an insurance card on my phone okay?
DMV's drive test pages only say valid proof of insurance. Bring a printed card too in case the examiner asks for paper.
Do I need my own insurance policy to take the test?
DMV's pages don't require the policy to be in your name. The car you bring must be insured and registered.
