I'm 18 or older with a permit. How soon can I take the California drive test?
DMV doesn't list a waiting period for adults. The 6-month permit requirement, driver education, driver training and 50 practice hours apply to applicants under 18. If you're 18 or older, you can book the drive test once you have your instruction permit and feel ready, subject to appointment availability.
What applies only to teens
DMV's under-18 rules require holding a permit for at least 6 months, completing driver education and 6 hours of professional training, and logging 50 hours of practice (10 at night) with a licensed adult 25 or older. DMV's adult section doesn't include these. It says adults who have never been licensed may get an instruction permit until they're ready for the driving test.
Who can supervise you
Under Vehicle Code 12509, you may drive only with a California-licensed driver who is 18 or older and not on probation. That person must sit where they can help you control the car. You can't drive alone, including to your drive test.
How long you have
Your application and $46 fee are valid for 12 months and cover 3 drive test attempts. Check the expiration date on your permit, and book early, because DMV gives drive tests by appointment only and openings vary by office.
Ready isn't the same as allowed
No minimum hours doesn't mean no practice. The examiner scores you on the same DL 32 sheet as teen drivers, and one critical error fails the test. Practice freeway merging, lane changes with head checks, and backing before you book.

FAQ
I'm 17 and a half. Do the adult rules apply to me?
Not fully. DMV says you can get a permit after 17½ without driver education certificates, but you can't take the drive test until you turn 18.
Can I book the drive test the same day I get my permit?
DMV's pages don't forbid booking right away, but drive tests need an appointment and slots fill up. Many offices won't have a same-day opening.
Does the supervising driver need to be 25?
Only for drivers under 18. For adults, Vehicle Code 12509 requires a California-licensed driver who is 18 or older.
