What can I use as proof of California residency at the DMV?
One document for a standard license, two different ones for a REAL ID. DMV accepts things like a signed lease, mortgage or utility bill (cell phone included), bank or credit card statement, insurance document, tax return, school, medical or employment document, or a government letter. Photocopies are accepted, but each must show your first and last name and the same California mailing address as your application.
Common documents that work
Rental or lease agreement signed by you and the landlord. Deed, mortgage bill or property tax bill. Home utility bill, including cell phone. Bank, credit union or credit card record. Insurance document (medical, dental, vision, life, home, renters or car). IRS or California FTB tax return. California vehicle title or registration. USPS change-of-address confirmation. Voter registration confirmation.
Less obvious documents
A medical, employment or faith-based document. A court document listing you as a California resident. A letter on letterhead from a shelter, nonprofit, employer, faith-based organization or government agency saying you live in California. Proof of resident tuition at a California public college.
School and government documents
A U.S. school document must include your date of birth. A foreign school document must be sealed by the school and include your photo at the age it was issued. A document from a government agency must be typed and show the agency or department name, a state seal or official letterhead.
Living with parents or a spouse
If the bills aren't in your name, you can use a family member's document plus a birth certificate, marriage license or domestic partner certificate that shows how you're related. If names changed, bring the name-change papers too.

Yes. For residency, DMV accepts photocopies, informational copies and computer-generated documents.
Do I need residency documents for a standard license?
Yes, one. DMV won't accept an application without at least one residency document. A REAL ID needs two different ones.
