How do I get an AB 60 driver's license in California?
If you can't prove legal presence in the U.S. but can prove your identity and California residency, you can apply for an AB 60 driver's license. The steps are the same as for a regular license: application, documents, fee, vision exam, knowledge test (offered in more than 40 languages) and a drive test by appointment. The card is mailed to you.
Start with DMV's AB 60 checklist
DMV has an online AB 60 wizard that tells you which identity and residency documents you can use. Run it before your visit so you don't show up with the wrong papers.
If you don't have the listed documents
You'll need a Secondary Review interview with DMV staff. It has to be done before your drive test, so leave time for that extra step.
The tests
The knowledge test covers the same handbook material with the same 80% pass mark, and you can take it in your language. Book the drive test through the DMV appointment system or by phone at 1-800-777-0133. Applicants aged 15 to 17½ must also complete driver education.
What an AB 60 license can't do
It's a valid California license for driving, but it isn't REAL ID compliant. A card marked "Federal Limits Apply" can't be used to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities.

FAQ
Does an AB 60 license cost more?
DMV's AB 60 page doesn't list a separate fee. The standard original Class C application fee is $46.
Can I get a REAL ID instead?
No. AB 60 applicants can't get a REAL ID compliant card.
Can I bring an interpreter?
DMV offers interpreter services. During the drive test, an interpreter can help only with the pre-drive vehicle check, not with the driving.
