My California license expires when my visa, I-94 or EAD expires. How do I extend it?
If you hold temporary legal status, your California license expires on the same date as your U.S. legal presence document. To extend it, you bring DMV a new or extended legal presence document that is valid for at least 60 more days from the day you apply. DMV checks that document with USCIS before it issues a new card. Once the card's expiration date passes, it is no longer a valid license, so don't drive on it.
Why the dates match
DMV calls these cards "limited term." A first license is limited term when your legal presence document expires less than five years after you apply. The card then carries the same expiration date as that document, whether it's an I-94, an EAD card (I-766) or another accepted record.
How to extend it
Get your new status document first: an extended I-94, a renewed EAD card, an approval notice, or a new visa and I-94. DMV's limited-term page says the new document must expire 60 or more days from the day you apply. DMV says REAL ID holders with temporary status can't renew by mail and must visit a field office, so plan on an in-person visit either way.
What to bring
Your current license, the original new legal presence document, and your Social Security number if you have one. DMV's pages don't list a separate fee for a legal-presence extension; check the fee table before you go. If you also want to change your address or name at the same visit, bring the documents for that too.
Verification can take time
DMV first checks your document electronically with USCIS. If that check doesn't confirm it, DMV sends a copy to USCIS for a second review. During that review you may get a temporary license, and if it takes longer than 75 days DMV mails you a letter explaining what's still needed.
Pending renewals and automatic extensions
USCIS ended automatic EAD extensions for renewal applications filed on or after October 30, 2025. A receipt notice for a newer renewal does not extend your work card. DMV's pages don't say whether it accepts a receipt notice alone to extend a license, so don't count on it.

FAQ
Can I drive on my expired license while USCIS processes my case?
No. DMV says you need a valid California license to drive, and a license past its printed expiration date is not valid. Keep your proof of a pending case with you, but it doesn't replace a license.
My I-94 has no end date. How long will my license last?
DMV's non-citizen page says that when the federal verification shows no definite end date, the card is valid for one year from the application date. It gives this rule in its TPS section; ask at the office how it applies to you.
Do I have to retake the written test?
DMV's limited-term page doesn't mention a knowledge test for an extension. Read any notice DMV sends you, since it will list what that visit requires.
