California DMV · Checked against dmv.ca.gov on October 9, 2026
How many questions are on the California DMV written test, and how many can I miss?
You need 80% to pass. DMV's current pages don't say how many questions are on the test. An older DMV research report described 36 questions for adult first-time applicants and 46 for applicants under 18, which would allow 7 and 9 mistakes, but treat those numbers as unofficial.
What DMV does confirm
The test is multiple choice, each question has one correct answer, and every question comes from the California Driver's Handbook. You get 3 attempts on one application.
What the questions cover
Expect road signs and signals, right-of-way, speed limits, following distance, parking rules, alcohol and drugs, and sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists and trucks. Sign questions usually ask what you should do, not just what the sign is called.
Rules in the room
No handbook, notes or phone. In the office, the test has to start before 4:30 p.m. If you miss a question, staff can tell you which handbook page covers it.
How to study
Read the handbook once, then take DMV's free sample tests. Spend extra time on the numbers, such as speed limits in special zones and distances near railroad crossings. That's where most people slip.
Free practice by topic
The full bank has 1,000+ questions across 15 topics, each explained option by option and available in 8 languages beside the original English.

FAQ
Is the under-18 test different?
Older DMV material describes a longer form for applicants under 18. The pass mark is 80% either way.
Can I take it online?
As of October 2026, DMV's online testing is only for eligible Class C renewals. First-time applicants take it at a DMV office.
