What does my car need to pass the California DMV drive test check?
Before you drive, the examiner checks your car. The driver window must open, the windshield must give a clear view, and you need at least 2 mirrors (one on the left), working brake lights, tires with at least 1/32 inch of tread and no donut spare, a working horn, parking brake, signals, wipers and seat belts. If the car fails, the test is rescheduled.
The checklist from the handbook
Driver window that opens. Windshield with a full, clear view (cracks may postpone the test). At least 2 rearview mirrors, one on the left side. Left and right brake lights working. Tires with at least 1/32 inch of even tread, no donut spare. At least 1 inch between the pressed brake pedal and the floor. A horn that can be heard from 200 feet. Seat belts that work.
Controls you must show
The examiner will ask you to set and release the parking brake, show your left turn, right turn and slow/stop signals (arm signals too), and may ask you to show the windshield wipers working. Practice finding each one in the car you'll test in.
Paperwork for the car
Bring valid proof of insurance and current registration. For a rental, your name must be on the contract and the contract must not exclude drive tests.
Driver-assist features
Automated parallel parking, lane departure assist and adaptive cruise control aren't allowed during the test. Backup cameras and blind spot monitors are okay, but you still have to turn your head and check mirrors.

FAQ
Can I take the test in a car with a cracked windshield?
The handbook says windshield cracks may postpone your test. If the crack is in your or the examiner's view, fix it or use another car.
Can I use a car with a dashcam?
Recording is not allowed during the drive test. If the device can't be turned off, you must cover it so nothing is recorded.
