What mistakes automatically fail the California drive test?
Any single critical driving error fails the test. DMV's DL 32 score sheet lists 8 categories: examiner intervention, striking an object or curb, disobeying a sign or signal, disobeying safety personnel or vehicles, a dangerous maneuver, speed, failing to use needed equipment, and a lane violation. Otherwise, you can have no more than 15 errors on the scored maneuvers.
Intervention and striking objects
If the examiner has to grab the wheel, press a brake or loudly say "Stop," that's an intervention. Taking 3 attempts to back up also counts. Hitting a vehicle, object, person or animal that could have been avoided, or driving over a curb or onto a sidewalk, is a critical error too.
Signs, signals and safety vehicles
Rolling through a stop sign, a flashing red light or a right turn on red faster than a brisk walk (4 mph) is a critical error. So is not stopping for a red light, stopping for no reason at a green light, or ignoring painted arrows, islands or cones. Passing a school bus with flashing red lights or not pulling over for an emergency vehicle also fails the test.
Dangerous maneuvers
This includes making another driver or pedestrian brake or swerve to avoid you, blocking an intersection, or making an unnecessary stop in a freeway merge lane. Not checking mirrors and blind spots when changing lanes, merging, backing, pulling from the curb or turning right across a bike lane is also listed. Many people fail on this one by forgetting the head check.
Speed, equipment and lane use
Driving 10 mph over the limit, or 10 mph under when conditions don't call for it, is a critical error. So is not using wipers, defroster or headlights when needed. Lane violations include driving more than 200 feet in a bike lane or center turn lane, going straight from a turn-only lane, and turning from the wrong lane.
How the rest is scored
The DL 32 says that to pass you need no marks in the critical driving error section, no more than 15 errors on the scoring maneuvers, and no more than 3 errors on pre-drive items 9 to 14 (parking brake, arm signals, wipers, defroster, emergency flashers, headlights).

FAQ
Is it an automatic fail if I stall the car?
Stalling in an intersection is listed as a dangerous maneuver, and so is stalling 3 times from poor clutch or gear use. A single stall elsewhere isn't listed as a critical error.
Do backup cameras or lane assist count against me?
Automated features such as automated parallel parking aren't allowed. You can have a backup camera, but you still have to turn and check; relying on it instead of looking can count as not checking.
Will the examiner tell me what I did wrong?
The examiner marks your errors on the DL 32 score sheet. Ask to go over it after the test so you know what to practice.
