How do I book a California DMV appointment?
Open DMV's appointment page and pick the type. For a permit, first license or the written test, choose the first-time driver's license application on the left, then get an appointment. For the drive test, choose a vehicle on the right (Automobile for a car), then make an appointment. You can also call 1-800-777-0133.
Office visit: permit, first license, written test
On the left side of the appointments page, choose "First-time DL Application" (or "First-time REAL ID Application"), then the option to get an appointment in the future. Pick an office and a time.
Drive test
On the right side, under "Choose a vehicle", select "Automobile", then make an appointment. Drive tests are never given without one.
Same day: Get in Line Now
For office services, Get in Line Now lets you join an office's queue remotely instead of booking ahead. It doesn't work for drive tests.
Before you book
Finish the online application first and keep the confirmation code; it shortens the office visit. Written tests have to start before 4:30 p.m., so don't take the last slot of the day if you plan to test.

DMV doesn't publish a lead time. Openings vary a lot between offices, so check several nearby ones.
Which office should I choose?
Use DMV's office locator and filter by the service you need. Any office that offers testing works.
Can I book by phone?
Yes, call 1-800-777-0133.
