California DMV · Checked against dmv.ca.gov on October 9, 2026
I failed the California DMV written test. What now?
You get 3 attempts at each required knowledge test on one application. If you fail the same test 3 times, the application is no longer valid and you have to apply again and pay the fee again. Applicants under 18 must wait 7 days before retaking, not counting the day they failed.
How many tries do I get?
Three per required test, within the 12 months your application and $46 fee are valid. The pass mark is 80%.
How soon can I try again?
If you're under 18, wait 7 days, not counting the day you failed. DMV's pages don't state a waiting period for adults. In the office, the test has to start before 4:30 p.m.
What if I fail 3 times?
Your application becomes invalid. You submit a new application and pay the application fee again.
How to pass next time
Ask the staff which handbook pages cover the questions you missed. Then drill your weak topics instead of rereading the whole handbook. Sign questions ask what you should do, not just what a sign is called. Numbers such as distances and time limits are easy to mix up, so practice them on purpose.

FAQ
Do I pay again to retake the written test?
Not within your 3 attempts. The $46 application fee covers them. After 3 failures you reapply and pay again.
Can I retake it online?
As of October 2026, online testing is only for eligible Class C renewals, so first-time applicants retake it at a DMV office.
