My name doesn't match across documents. Can I still get a California REAL ID?
Usually yes, if you bring documents that connect the names. DMV requires your identity document to show your full legal name (first, middle and last) and your current name to match it. If your name has changed, bring at least one legal document for each name change, such as a marriage certificate, a divorce (dissolution) document or a court-ordered name change. Your Social Security record also has to match.
Which name goes on the card
DMV uses your "true full name": the name on your identity document, such as a passport, birth certificate or green card. If you want a different name on your license, you need legal paperwork that shows the change.
Accepted name change documents
DMV's REAL ID checklist accepts adoption documents, a name change document showing both the old and new names, a marriage certificate, a domestic partnership certificate, or a dissolution document showing the name the court set. If you changed your name more than once, bring a document for each change.
Name order and middle names
DMV's pages don't address name order, such as a Chinese family name written first, or a middle name missing on one document. In practice the name on your identity document is what DMV matches. If your passport, green card and Social Security card differ, fix the record that's wrong before your visit.
Update Social Security first
DMV checks your name against Social Security records. Its name-change page says to tell SSA your new name first; if the records don't match, the application is denied and DMV sends a verification letter.
Residency documents in another name
If your bills are in a spouse's or parent's name, DMV lets you link yourself to that person with a birth certificate, marriage certificate or domestic partnership document. If a residency document shows a different version of your own name, DMV may ask for more name change documents.

FAQ
My marriage certificate is in another language. Is it accepted?
DMV's REAL ID pages don't say whether a translation is required for name change documents. Bring the original and a certified English translation, and confirm with DMV before your visit.
Does the standard (non-REAL ID) license have the same name rule?
Yes. DMV's standard-license list also requires a document showing your true full name if your identity document name differs from your application.
