When does a California instruction permit expire, and what do I do if mine expired?
You can't drive on an expired permit. DMV's application and fee are valid for 12 months, and if they expire before you finish, you reapply at a DMV office and pay the application fee again. Teens get credit for the time they already held a permit toward the 6-month requirement, so bring both the old and new permits to the drive test.
How long a permit lasts
Vehicle Code 12509 lets an instruction permit be valid for up to 24 months from the application date, but you must qualify for it within 12 months. DMV says the application and fee are valid for 12 months. The date printed on your permit is the one to watch.
Reapplying
DMV's permit page describes reapplying at a DMV office, not renewing. Expect to submit a new application and pay the $46 fee again. DMV's pages don't say whether you must retake the knowledge test after reapplying, so ask staff and be ready in case you do.
What carries over for teens
DMV says you get cumulative credit for the time you held your instruction permit toward the 6-month requirement. Bring both your expired and valid permits to the drive test as proof. Keep your supervised driving log and training certificates too.
How to avoid it
Book the drive test well before the deadline, because appointments can be weeks out. Remember that 3 failed drive tests also end the application, even if time remains.

FAQ
Can I drive with my expired permit while I wait for a new one?
No. Driving with an expired permit means driving without a valid permit, even with a licensed driver beside you.
Do I lose my 50 practice hours?
DMV's pages don't say the hours expire. Keep your log and certificates and bring them when you reapply.
Do I have to retake the written test after my permit expires?
DMV's pages don't say either way. A new application normally includes the knowledge test, so study again and ask at the office when you reapply.
