California DMV · Checked against dmv.ca.gov on October 9, 2026
How long is a California temporary license valid, and when does the real card arrive?
After you pass, DMV gives you a temporary license valid for 60 days, and you can drive on it right away. The card is mailed and usually arrives in 3 to 4 weeks. If it hasn't come after 60 days, call DMV at 1-800-777-0133.
Driving on the temporary license
You can drive without an accompanying driver until it expires. If you're under 18, the provisional rules start on day one: no driving from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and no passengers under 20 without a qualifying adult.
Check the status online
DMV's status tool shows where your card is. You'll need your license number, a MyDMV login and a phone.
Is it a REAL ID?
If you chose REAL ID, the card has a golden bear with a star. Since May 7, 2025 you need that card, or another accepted ID such as a passport, for U.S. domestic flights.
