What happens at the California DMV drive test?
The drive test has two parts: a pre-drive safety check of your car, then the driving itself, scored on DMV's DL 32 sheet. Bring your permit, a licensed driver to accompany you, and an insured, registered car that passes the check. Tests are by appointment only, and the $46 application fee covers 3 attempts.
What to bring
Your instruction permit; a California-licensed driver who is at least 18 (25 if you're under 18), unless you're already licensed; and valid proof of insurance and registration. A rental car must have your name on the contract, and the contract can't exclude drive tests.
The pre-drive check, where people get sent home
The examiner checks that the driver's window opens, the windshield is clear, there are at least 2 mirrors with one on the left, the brake lights and turn signals work, the tires have at least 1/32 inch of tread and none is a donut spare, the horn can be heard, and the parking brake, wipers and seat belts work. If the car fails, the test is rescheduled.
Car features you can't use
Automatic parallel parking, lane-departure assist and adaptive cruise control aren't allowed. Backup cameras and blind-spot monitors are fine, but you still have to turn your head and check. No recording, and only the examiner rides with you.
How it's scored
DMV publishes the examiner's score sheet, form DL 32, and a Safe Driver Checklist of the skills being tested. Read both before your test so you know what the examiner is watching for.
If you fail
Each retest costs $9. Under 18, you wait 14 days. Adults book a new test on another day. After 3 failures you reapply and pay the application fee again.

FAQ
Can an interpreter come with me?
Only for the pre-drive check. During the driving, only the examiner is in the car.
Do I have to wear my glasses?
If you passed the vision exam with glasses or contacts, wear them. Your license will carry a corrective-lens restriction.
How far ahead should I book?
DMV doesn't publish a lead time, and openings vary by office. Check several nearby offices on the appointment page.
