What do road sign shapes and colors mean in California?
The shape tells you the type of sign before you can read it. An octagon is STOP, a downward triangle is YIELD, a 5-sided (pentagon) sign means a school, a round sign or X warns of a railroad crossing, a diamond warns of road conditions, and a rectangle states rules or gives directions. Color adds meaning: red stops or prohibits, yellow warns, orange marks road work, white states rules.
Shapes
Octagon (8 sides): STOP. Downward triangle: YIELD. Circle: railroad crossing ahead. Crossbuck (X): the railroad crossing itself. Pentagon (5 sides, pointed up): school zone or school crossing. Pennant (sideways triangle): no passing zone. Diamond: warning. Rectangle: rules, directions or information. Trapezoid: recreation areas.
Colors
Red: stop, yield or not allowed. Yellow: general warning. Fluorescent yellow-green: school, pedestrian and bicycle warnings. Orange: road work and temporary changes. White: regulatory rules such as speed limits. Green: directions and permitted moves. Blue: services such as gas, food or a hospital. Brown: parks and recreation.
The 5-sided yellow sign
A pentagon means you're near a school. The handbook says to drive slowly and stop for children in the crosswalk. The speed limit is 25 mph within 500 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing, and some school zones go as low as 15 mph.
How this shows up on the written test
Sign questions usually ask what to do, not what the sign is called. Learn the shape and color first, then the action: full stop, slow and be ready to stop, or watch for the hazard shown.

FAQ
Is a yellow diamond sign a rule or a warning?
A warning. It tells you about conditions ahead, such as curves, merges or slippery roads. Rules are on white rectangles and red-and-white signs.
What does an orange sign mean?
Road work or another temporary change ahead. Slow down and watch for workers and equipment. Fines are doubled in construction zones when workers are present.
