Renewing a California license at 70 or older: in person? Vision test? Written test?
If you're 70 or older when your license expires, you must renew in person at a DMV office and pass a vision test. Since October 1, 2024, most drivers 70 and older no longer take the written knowledge test. Drivers with recent crashes, a DUI suspension or more than one violation point may still need one.
In person, every five years
DMV's senior page says drivers 70 and older must renew in person every five years. You can start the application online to save time, then finish at the office. The visit is for a vision exam and a new photo.
Who still takes the written test
DMV's September 2024 release lists the exceptions: two or more crashes in the two years before expiration, three or more in the three years before, a DUI suspension in the two years before, or more than one violation point in the two years before. If your notice says you need a test but you don't fall in these groups, DMV said the test would be waived at the office.
If you do need a test
DMV says you may be able to choose eLearning when you complete the application online. It's a no-fail course of videos and short quizzes, offered in English, Spanish and Traditional Chinese with Mandarin audio.
Other exams
The handbook says other exams may be required in some cases, without listing them, and points to DMV's reexamination process for details. DMV's pages don't say that turning 70 by itself triggers a drive test.

FAQ
When will my renewal notice arrive?
DMV's senior page says about 60 days before expiration; the handbook says about 90. If it hasn't arrived and your license expires soon, apply online or at an office anyway.
How much does renewal cost?
As of October 2026, DMV's fee table lists $46 for a Class C renewal.
Can I renew online if I'm over 70?
Not completely. You can start online, but DMV requires the in-person visit for the vision exam and photo.
